Final Show
There is still hope for the 90's themed night, but the student responsible for arranging it with the venue is proving hard to get hold of. Hopefully once this project is out of the way it will be a bit easier to organise & get people together to discuss it. As i have shown, i have designed the poster for the night, but i need a date etc. to use it to promote.
If we do not manage to organise a fundraising activity we will have to split the payment for the business cards and anything else we may need for the show between the class. This was the reason for the fundraiser, so make it easier for people to afford! hopefully though, this is not how it will end up, this 90's night is looking like our last chance to raise some money.

Portfolio
This is an article I designed in 1st year for a Typeradio interview with the design team Syrup Helsinki. I would like to include this as it shows I have experience with Quark & I need to display all my software skills if possible.
This piece was created when I was experimenting with printmaking. I also combined it with Photoshop to include parts of photos taken in London. It all seems to blend well though, you can't really tell what has been photoshopped in because I took the image & created a brush set from it. This gave it the same effect as the hand printed items. This image demonstrates my ability to try new techniques.
This was also a 1st year piece, the brief was to appeal to young people to stop dangerous behaviour around the sea. I was very pleased with the way these images came out & am satisfied they communicate the brief well. The first image is the poster along with the postcards at the bottom.

I created this on 1st year & it is still one of my favourite pieces of work. It was designed as a postcard to sum up my home town (Bournemouth) & what it meant to me. It shows the seaside part of the town, which is the main attraction, & it also shows part of the Mister Smiths logo which when it was open, was a popular live music venue which I went to a lot.
This was something I did outside of college, just for fun really. I made a set of t-shirt designs in a similar style, with this being my favourite. This is something very different to the other work I have decided to include with my portfolio, so something I should use. the majority of it was done using Illustrator & I think you can see that which is another skill I need to show off.
This photo is one that I took to use with the RNLI project. I might choose to diplay them both together as they are related, but I would definitely like to show that I have experimented with photography. It is something that I am interested in & I would like to show how varied my design interests are.
This is a collection of greeting cards I designed on 2nd year, they were all birthday themed & laid out as operating instructions. They seemed quite popular with you I showed them to & the designs worked very well with achieving the desired look. I will most likely include the actual cards i designed as well as this photo, this is just to demonstrate how well they work as a set.

Jonathan Barnbrook
Although I am not a huge fan of Jonathan Barnbrooks work, some of it is alright, but in general I think his design work is over cluttered & I personally do not like the majority of his fonts. But having him come to talk with us was a great & very informative opportunity from which i have come away with some useful information. It definitely fills me with a bit more confidence of getting a job that I enjoy.

New York
For last year's educational trip we went to Berlin, this time we visited New York! I had a great time, unfortunately though, due to flight times we didn't get that many full days in New York. But while we were there we went to MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) which really surprised me. Whereas I would generally go to agllery & see odd things i liked with most of it not being that interesting, this gallery was almost all work that caught my eye. Below are some of the many photos i took while looking round. There was such a variety, but all of great work that I really loved.
What did disappoint me though was the amount on the Helvetica exhibition, as this was the main reason I wanted to go. What was on show was very interesting, but this was only a very small portion of the gallery. It showed a few different uses of the font & a brief history of the font. But it didn't make too much difference, as like I said, the rest of the gallery was very interesting.....
As well as MOMA, there was some sight seeing & shopping. We visited the Empire State Building & took the trip up the near the top. We also took the ferry to Staton island which lead us past the Statue of Liberty. We did not actually go to the statue, but this ferry got us close enough to take some decent photos.

CV
This is a scan of what my CV looks like once printed out on one type of hand made paper I have experimented with. It gives it a nice rough edge & I really like the effect made by the ink getting caught on the edges! It gives the whole thing that added personal feel & it definately stands out over the usual standard paper printed CV's.

http://www.designweek.co.uk/Jobs/32786/Fashion+Graphic+Designer.html
This job seems really interesteing, it seems not many fashion companies would go straight for graphic designers, more for fashion designers specifically. I am very confident with Photoshop & Illustrator, the only drawback is the required 4 years experience. i have been a design student for 6 years now but i don't know if this is something they would consider as what they want. I have also experimented with making my own t-shirt designs before, so I have had experience in the same area of work the require. I went through several different styles with by designs, so maybe I can show parts of all of them which would demonstrate my flexibility within this particular industry.

My skills do not cover all of the coding they mentioned, but i am fairly confident in HTML & know how to use CSS & some JavaScript. This one may be something worth considering. Chances are, I wouldn't need to know all of them anyway. I have made several HTML websites myself & my main one hosted by the Vis Com page is made in Flash. So I have experienced several areas of web design. & of course, InDesign & Illustrator I know well, so it would be no problem if they wanted me to design using them. In fact, this could be my advantage, as I know these programs, particularly Illustrator, very well.

Although I don't have experience in a similar role as they ask, this is my first job, but I do know all the software they ask for. Specifically Illustrator & Quark I am very confident in. But I would say I know more Quark than I do InDesign. Also I know CSS & HTML which is a bonus & gives me some advantage. Of course I am highly motivated to learn new skills as I have only the knowledge gained from university. But in general I think I would have most of the knowledge required to be successful in this job.

I have worked equally with PC's & Macs so I have the neccessary experience in that area. But this ad does not specify any particular software, though I do know all the main programs needed for design so I don't see this being a problem, I am sure my portfolio demonstrates i have the skills needed to be a designer. It seems as if it is just a general design job & something I would be quite capable in.

We have been retained by a very successful London based Architectural practices to find a graphic designer to work on internal projects. A good understanding of Photoshop is important as you will be working with the senior graphic designers assisting with literature and internal reports. Please apply with a recent resume and small pdf of work examples, thank you.Network-Career Management Consultants is acting as an Employment Agency in relation to this vacancy.

Although I am very confident with Photoshop i have never looked at Framemaker, not even heard of it. If this is something that is used within the industry I may have to find out what it is. If it is simply another layout program, I am fluent in Quark & InDesign. But Photoshop skills are not a problem, I know how to to use that confidently.

I actually use Quark more than I do inDesign & as this is the program it asks for experience in it shouldn't be a problem. Illustrator & Quark, I am more than competent in & yes, i can produce my own artwork. i don't know any other way in the work I have done so far (apart from some photography used in band posters/flyers) so this job would seem ideal in terms of my skills compared to the ones that are required.

Fda Vis com - Fundraiser
Cue To Eclipse - gig listings flyer
This image was created using a combination of both Illustrator & Photoshop using the fonts Silver Sideshow & Alte Haas Grotesk. As the band have no promo photos, just live ones of individual members I chose against using that approach. The flyer includes a couple of quotes from well respected sources where they have been described as epic & compared to arctic tundra. So I found a royalty free image of an epic landscape photo of the arctic from www.sxc .hu & edited the colour/contrast/brightness to create this. There are no filters used & the border was created by drawing lines in Illustrator & selecting a different brush type to create the rough effect. I think the image really sums up the big ambitious sound that the band utilises. The font used for the actual listings gives it that rock image, while the top half of the image demonstrates their softer & big epic side which is something very important to the band. It is the part of them that defines their sound best.Monday, 31 March 2008
Gig Poster
This gig poster was created using a royalty free photo of a London building from www.sxc.hu, I edited the colours quite a lot for this image. The font used is Alte Haas Grotesk & the whole thing was done using Photoshop. This wasn't actually the first idea I was working on, I originally had something a lot more dirty in mind, but it occured to me that it was a bit too typical for a gig poster & in order to stand out it needed to be different. I think it sums up the music quite nicely & stands out. Both Shadow Army & Cue To Eclipse have the big epic moments & sing along parts, so I think the skyline view really represents that well. Also the colour modification I have added really gives it a surreal look, once again representing the epic moments of the band. As apart from this, the bands are all quite different & this is the part where they relate, this is what I chose to focus on for the design. The layout of the information at the top is very eyecatching, the heirarchy works perfectly with all the important parts are in bolder larger text, so when people decide they want to go, they can read in to the smaller text.

D&AD - Part3

After a discussion with Kit & looking at where my ideas for the MTV brief are going, I have seen ways to really push the ideas to the extreme. As I researched into MTV & saw how they like to be seen as rebellious & in your face, I started to think how I could demonstrate this more in my design.

Cue To Eclipse web banner
Our page is www.myspace.com/cuetoeclipse where you can see the banner in action & the rest of the page which I did the designs for.
The font I have used is Trajan Pro as this is the font used for most band related design (it is part of the EP design). It fits the image & sound of the band very well, as the idea behind the music is metal/post-hardcore with an epic edge. It is also a nice contrast to the logo, which conjures images of a metal band. The Trajan Pro represents the epic side of the band. The background I have used is also based on the CD, it is the same texture but with a green tint & a pattern added. I also used this look for the Myspace design. I didn't want to just use black in the typical metal band fashion, I tried to make this band seem a bit different as the music has been said to be like nothing else out there. Cue to Eclipse have been said the sidestep all the cliches & I wanted to keep this in mind.
Back To The Drawing Board & Cherry Promotions

Originally, their page was the shade of blue I have used in the image above which is the reason for the colour choice. But they later decided they may change the page colour to white & wanted a black & white version of the same image......
The Myspace design for Cherry Productions was a little more difficult as they had no idea what they wanted. But at the time it was a basic as you can get white page & everything was bog standard, not very attractive. So I changed the main colour, I didn't want to over complicate things, because there is nothing worse on Myspace than when someone gets all creative & changes the layout! it is hard to navigate & can create bugs when it attempts to load & doesn't work as it should. I based the new layout around a banner at the top of the page & created a new identity for it. I tried to give it an old Hollywood style look, but keep it looking modern. So I didn't want to stick with the black & white that is commonly used with that sort of design, I just wanted that to imply the professionalism of the studio. This informed my choice of font, & also the idea of using an old style microphone as the main image. The image was created by taking a photo of the mic & creating a path in Photoshop, then importing it into Illustrator to add colour & an outline to it.
